Steps To Choose The Best Water Pump

Sizing Your Irrigation Pump Properly- To determine the right Water Pump size, first of all you need to figure out how many sprinkler heads you have along with GPM and PSI requirements. All sprinkler heads comes with specific GPM and PSI and use sprinkler heads of the same GPM and PSI rating through your system.

How High are You Pumping? - The rise in the elevation must be less than 25 feet high but ideally should be no more than 5 feet high. The suction head limitation will be listed as spec as each pump, but should never exceeds 25 feet at sea level. Measure the distance from the surface of the water resource straight up until it meets the elevation of your pump.

How Far are you Pumping? - If the distance of the Water Pump to the furthest sprinkler is under 100 the standard 1-1/2 discharge pipe will work. But if the distance is 100’-300’, you will need to go to a 2” discharge pipe instead. If the distance is 300’-600’ then you need to increase the diameter of the discharge pipe is 2-1/2”.

Power Requirements- Most pumps are dual voltage rated which means that they will operate either 115 volts or 230 volts. Some of the larger pump are 2-1/2 HP, 3 HP and larger are rated at 230 volts or 208/230/460 3-phase. If you have no electricity available where you are installing your sprinkler pump, you will have to choose a gas powered pump as alternative. Depending on requirements, it may require high pressure gas pump.

Priming Method- You require your pump to prime with priming port and pump housing with water upon initial installation to force any air out and allow for the impeller to start sucking water.

Choosing a Location for your Irrigation Pump- As the sprinkler pumps are not designed for suction head over 25 feet and you want to install them as close to the water resource as possible.
